Semester Hour/ Quarter Calendar
Louisiana Tech University operates on a quarter calendar, but the unit of academic credit awarded is the semester hour. This is accomplished by increasing the amount of contact time per class meeting. For 3 hours of course credit, students attending classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will be in class for 1 hour 15 minutes. Students attending classes on Tuesday and Thursday will be in class for 1 hour 50 minutes. In contrast, on the semester calendar for 3 hours of course credit, students attending classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will be in class for 55 minutes. Students attending classes on Tuesday and Thursday will be in class for 1 hour 30 minutes. An additional 20 minutes of class lecture allows us to adjust the 9 month academic calendar from 2 traditional semesters to 3 quarters.
The minimum number of hours an undergraduate student can take to be considered full-time is 8, the maximum being 12 for one quarter. On the semester system the minimum number of hours an undergraduate student can take to be considered full-time is 12 the maximum being 18.
